Line of Sight

Step 1: Antenna Direction Texas

The general directions that your WildBlue dish should face are southwest or south. About 199° azimuth around Austin. StarBand azimuth is about 224°.

In addition, if you're adding DISH service, your DISH Network dish should face about 210°.

On your DISH Network receiver remote press menu-6-1-1, go to peak angles and plug in your zip code. It will give you the azimuth and elevation angles for your location.

Step 2: Finding an unobstructed Line of Sight

Take the compass information above and go outside. Stand safely close to where you want to place the antenna, and point your arm in the direction indicated by the compass. Then determine if you have a direct view of the sky in that direction.

How to determine a direct view

To have a direct view means that no trees, buildings, or other objects are in the way of your view.

You should not look directly up at a 90º angle, like figure 1 in the illustration, or straight out at a 0º angle like figure 3, but between a 30º and 50º angle. Figure 2 is the best example for the angle you should use to determine if you have a Line of Sight.

If there are no trees, buildings, or other obstructions in the general direction of where you are pointing, then you have successfully achieved a Line of Sight. If there is an obstruction in the general direction you are looking then try another location on your property.
